Pfizer has launched a trial offer to buy 50% of the company's leading erectile dysfunction treatment Viagra, after Pfizer’s Viagra patent expired.
The company is keen to retain its key patent holders who had been granted free reign to make their own versions of the drug but now face the risk of losing their exclusive rights to the drug due to the patent expiry.
The Pfizer patent on Viagra expired in 2015 and is expected to expire in the next few years, although the patent holder Pfizer said it will soon launch its own version of the drug after its patent expires in the first quarter of 2017.
The launch of the trial offers the company a chance to retain some key patents, while raising the possibility of a more strategic strategy to maintain its leadership in erectile dysfunction medication.
Pfizer said it is working with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and regulators in the US to explore other treatments for the condition, including an enlarged prostate and a new medicine to address prostate cancer.
The move comes after a study comparing Viagra's efficacy to that of other similar drugs, including Cialis and Levitra, showed no clinically significant difference in erections.
While the trials are still early stage, Pfizer said it had planned to launch new medicines to treat prostate cancer in the short term and to treat other indications beyond erectile dysfunction, including diabetes and depression.
The Viagra trial offer comes after the company announced it had taken the decision to stop funding research into erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation treatments after the patents expired, which has resulted in a wider range of treatments available.
Pfizer said it had reached out to its partner for comment, while the FDA had asked the company to update its product information on Tuesday.
Earlier this year, the company said it had raised more than $50 million (£24.7m) from investors to finance its clinical trials and to ensure the deal's success.
In a statement, Pfizer said: "We are committed to continuing to support the ongoing clinical trials and ensuring that the Viagra trial offer is successful and that regulatory approval is granted to support our ongoing clinical trials and to ensure that Pfizer continues to support the ongoing clinical trials for the treatments currently under development."
Viagra is a treatment for erectile dysfunction in men between the ages of 18 and 64, and is marketed by Pfizer under the brand name Sildenafil citrate. The drug belongs to a class of drugs known as phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors.
It works by increasing blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation, helping to achieve and maintain an erection.
The trial offer will not be given to children under the age of 18.
